AMMA

January 2020 - May 2022

AMMA Sri Lanka was a social enterprise which employed women in the Nuwara Eliya region of Sri Lanka to make handwoven, plant dyed textiles. This rare and beautiful endeavour sought to make ethical textiles and provide livelihoods to a multi-generational group of women.

I was asked to design a zero waste capsule collection for them and invited to spend a month with the team in the workshop. During that time I was designing and creating toiles while the team worked, so the collection was developed in context. I taught the team to cut and sew the collection and we worked together to implement production systems that complimented the in-house dying and weaving processes.

The collection was later launched as part of a successful kickstarter campaign to raise funds to continue the enterprise. Following this I worked with AMMA for two years coordinating production and working with the founder Josie Mackenzie on the overall vision.

While the enterprise unfortunately wasn't continued, its values and examples still inspire my own ideals for the future of our textile industry; to see the elements and colours of a landscape in simmering dye pots, colouring yarns ready for the loom that clatters in the next room.
